How Did Long Beach Get Its Name?

What is now called ‘Long Beach’ was in the beginnings two ranches that belonged to Spaniards. From there, the Bixby family took over, becoming successful ranchers. In 1880 William Willmore bought 4,000 acres of the land from the Bixby’s with the intent of creating a farm community called Willmore City. His plans failed and the Long Beach Land and Water Company bought the land, renaming it Long Beach. The long expanse of beach and waterfront property was aptly named.
